It is nine o’clock. I have been up for three hours. I am on my third cup of coffee and am pondering shenanigans. You see, One of the Girls is going on tour…in Chicagoland. I will be flying out on March 13 and will stay through the weekend in order to properly celebrate The Feast of St. Patrick. We’re playing at a few places. Stay tuned for more information as it arises.
Today, however, is the Feast of St. Matthias. My one tattoo is an icon of the Apostle. I’m a big fan. He comes in and follows Judas’ troubled tenure. Much trauma therapy ensues. Then he goes off and is crucified in what is now modern day Georgia. Sometimes, that’s what it looks like to follow Jesus. You show up, someone volunteers you, and it gets harder from there.
I like to joke that he’s a reasonable candidate for being patron for Gen X. In my experience, Gen X is anonymous, a smaller generation clocking hours without much fanfare. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule.
comes to mind. She’s tremendous. But most of us are serving quietly as bridges between much larger generations in ministry.Today’s Franciscan Nugget:
“Day Twenty Four - The First Note, Cont’d - The faults that we see in others are the subject of prayer rather than of criticism. We take care to cast out the beam from our own eye before offering to remove the speck from another's. We are ready to accept the lowest place when asked, and to volunteer to take it. Nevertheless, when asked to undertake work of which we feel unworthy or incapable, we do not shrink from it on the grounds of humility, but confidently attempt it through the power that is made perfect in weakness.
From the Book of Acts:
21 “So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place[b] in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added to the eleven apostles.
Sometimes a call looks like that. Processes are often mysterious, haphazard, and generally strange. Humility and gratitude are the only way through.
Y’all be excellent to each other.
thank you for the Franciscan Nugget.
